Lisa Whitehouse is Professor of Property Law, Policy and Practice in the Law School at the University of Southampton. Lisa is currently the Law School's REF2029 Outputs Co-ordinator and a member of the People, Property, Community Research Centre.

Current research
Lisa's most recent project was generously funded by abrdn Financial Fairness Trust. The project aims to improve the lives of households in housing debt and at threat of eviction by identifying ways to improve meaningful communication between them and their housing provider, thereby reducing the likelihood of court proceedings and eviction. The project ran from 1 October 2022 - 31 March 2024. The findings and final report can be found here
https://homematters.wordpress.hull.ac.uk/ Lisa's previous research project was funded by the ESRC (£45k). Running from April-December 2021, the project examined the court system’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in housing possession cases. Working with key actors within the process and combining a review of social science literature with primary data obtained from occupiers, landlords, legal practitioners and debt advisors, the project offered a unique assessment of the temporary initiatives introduced within the court system in England and Wales. The hope is that the project will offer a direct route to impact as a result of the involvement of the Ministry of Justice, Shelter, the Housing Law Practitioners’ Association and the Institute of Money Advisers as well as others.

Biography
Lisa graduated from the University of Hull in 1993 with a LLB (Hons) Law degree (first class) followed in 1999 by a PhD which examined the mortgage possession process in practice. During her doctoral studies she taught at the University of Hull (UoH) and was appointed to the post of Lecturer in 1997. She progressed through Senior Lecturer to Reader before her appointment at Southampton. She has taught a range of subjects including Land Law, Equity and Trusts and Company Law and has experience of introducing innovative modules such as the Clinic on Evictions and Repossessions. She was awarded Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in December 2020 and has won awards including ‘Best Supervisor Taught’ at the UoH Student-Led Teaching and Support Awards in 2019.
