Research interests
- Stochastic optimization, particularly chance constraints.
- Applications to public health, renewable energy, and sustainability.
Current research
Bismark Singh's research focuses on development of algorithms and heuristics for stochastic and deterministic optimization models, motivated by applications to (i) renewable energy management, and (ii) public health response to pandemics. The first task is formulating diverse and relevant societal problems as mathematical models, and the second task is developing novel algorithmic methods towards their solution.
Bismark Singh's work has been funded as a PI on grants by several agencies, including the US Department of Energy's Laboratory Directed Research & Development program, the German Research Foundation (DFG), and the European Open Science Cloud by the Horizon 2020 program (see, CV for a complete list of funders).
Bismark is open to collaborations worldwide on both the theory and application of discrete optimization methods, and is interested in supervising bachelors and masters thesis, in addition to PhD students and postdocs.
Positions available:
- A DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, German Research Foundation) funded postdoc position is available on optimal allocation of critical resources during pandemics. Experience in discrete optimization is required. Informal inquiries are welcome. Please see: 2517823PJ.
- For PhD positions, please apply directly on the university channels.
- Other non-funded projects, for bachelor or master thesis or otherwise, are welcome from talented students worldwide. Several projects are available. Experience in mathematical optimization is required.

Biography
Before moving to the UK, Bismark held a research position at the Department of Mathematics at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany from 2019 to 2022. From 2016 to 2019, Bismark worked in the Discrete Math & Optimization group at Sandia National Laboratories, US. In 2017, Bismark worked in the Chair of Stochastic Optimization at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany.
Bismark has held multiple visiting positions, both for teaching and research, worldwide.
Bismark received his habilitation (with a title of Dr. Dr. habil.) in mathematics from FAU, Germany in 2023. He obtained his PhD in 2016 from the Operations Research and Industrial Engineering program at The University of Texas at Austin, and a MS degree from the same institute in 2013. He received a BTech from the Chemical Engineering department at the Indian Institute of Technology IIT Delhi in 2011.
Bismark is an IEEE Senior Member. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (FIMA). He is also an Associate Fellow of The OR Society (AFORS). He is the winner of the 2023 Mathematics Young Investigator Award.
