Entry requirements
You'll need at least a 2:1 degree in Biological or Biomedical Sciences or a closely related subject.
You can also take this course as an undergraduate medical student if you've successfully completed at least three years of your medical degree and achieved 60% or above in all assessments in the academic year before starting.

English language requirements
If English isn't your first language, you'll need to complete an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to demonstrate your competence in English. You'll need all of the following scores as a minimum:

Course structure
Our MSc Biomedical Sciences by Research degree is offered as a full time course over 12 months.
You'll study a series of bespoke taught modules as well as two, 18-week research projects where you will gain a broad range of practical skills and valuable experience working in different research environments.
All students will take the following core modules:

You won't take any traditional exams on this course. Each module will be assessed as outlined in the individual module descriptions. We'll test your understanding, critical appraisal and application of knowledge through a range different assessment types.
Your final award will be either a Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Tuition fees
Fees for a year's study:
- UK students pay £13,000.
- EU and international students pay £27,800.
Deposit
If you're an international student on a full-time course, we'll ask you to pay £2,000 of your tuition fees in advance, as a deposit.

Application assessment fee
We’ll ask you to pay a £50 application assessment fee if you’re applying for a postgraduate taught course.
This is an extra one-off charge which is separate to your tuition fees and is payable per application. It covers the work and time it takes us to assess your application. You’ll be prompted to pay when you submit your application which won’t progress until you've paid.
If you're a current or former University of Southampton student, or if you’re applying for certain scholarships, you will not need to pay the fee. PGCE applications through GOV.UK and Master of Research (MRes) degree applications are also exempt. Find out if you’re exempt on our terms and conditions page.
Supporting information
In your personal statement, you'll need to indicate the research area that you wish to specialise in from the following choices:

All applicants who are invited for an interview will be required to give a short research presentation. In the interview, you must be able to show you can:
- relay and discuss research in your chosen field
- demonstrate the application of research knowledge
- communicate effectively, are self-motivated and resilient
You'll also need to submit two academic references.
Please include the required paperwork showing your first degree and your IELTS English language test score (if you are a non-native English speaker) with your application. Without these, your application may be delayed.
You may also be asked to provide:
