About this course

Develop your foundations of public health knowledge and skills with our postgraduate certificate in public health.

On this PGCert course, you'll gain an understanding of the key concepts and issues in public health, including:

  • wider determinants of health and inequalities
  • improving population health
  • disease prevention
  • putting research into practice

You'll also gain basic skills in research, critical thinking and public health problem solving.

Our public health certificate programme is a shorter postgraduate course including the same key modules and master's-level content as our MPH Public Health degree programme. It is ideal for people who are already working in public health or don't have time to study a full master's degree.

This course will give you:

  • a recognised qualification to start or continue your public health career
  • the opportunity to create your own programme by choosing modules that fit your learning needs
  • transferable skills including team-working, communication, and managing yourself and your work

Advance your career with a postgraduate certificate in public health

Whether you are just starting your public health career, or you want to develop your practice further, our sector-leading experts will help you become a public health professional who can make a difference on a local, national or global scale.

You'll be taught and supported by practitioners from the local public health workforce, as well as senior academics and researchers from across the university.

We aim to be as flexible as possible and work around your requirements, so you have the chance to study and learn at a pace that’s right for you. Please contact the Course Lead, Professor Emma Plugge if you would like to discuss this further.

Flexible study

If you prefer, you can apply to study this course as:

  • a part-time postgraduate certificate (PGCert) - study the same course content over 2 years

“Studying alongside a full-time busy job can be challenging, but ‘biting off’ the masters one module at a time has proved more than manageable. The learning has quickly and directly informed and improved my confidence and work. Southampton have been so supportive – the lectures, projects and reading have been accessible and relevant, and the assessments have been fair, detailed and supportive.”
Colin McAllister, Senior Public Health Practitioner at Southampton City Council, 2021 first year student
