About this course

Advance your public health knowledge and develop essential skills with our postgraduate diploma in public health.

On this PGDip course, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the key concepts in public health, such as:

  • improving population health
  • disease prevention
  • putting research into practice
  • wider determinants of health and inequalities

You'll also gain research skills, as well as skills in using data and critical appraisal, which are essential to any role in public health.

This postgraduate course contains key modules from the same master's-level content as our MPH Public Health degree programme, but does not require you to study the full master's.

Our public health diploma course will give you:

  • an opportunity to start or continue your public health career with a recognised qualification
  • the flexibility to choose modules and create your own programme around your learning needs
  • transferable skills in problem solving, teamworking, confidence, and managing yourself and your work

Progress your career with a postgraduate diploma in public health

Whether you're at the start of your public health career, or you're looking to advance your practice, our sector-leading team of experts will help you become a public health professional who can make a difference locally, nationally or globally.

Practitioners from the local public health workforce will teach and support you throughout this course, as well as senior academics and researchers from across the university.

We aim to work around your requirements and be as flexible as possible, so you have the opportunity to learn and study at a pace that's best for you. Please contact the Course Lead, Professor Emma Plugge if you would like to discuss this further.

Flexible study

If you prefer, you can apply to study this course as:

Course lead

This PGDip Public Health course is led by Professor Emma Plugge. Emma is a doctor who is trained in public health, and works both in the UK and internationally. She is also an active researcher, and her research at our Population Health Sciences centre focuses on the health of marginalised populations. View Emma's staff profile for more information.

“Studying alongside a full-time busy job can be challenging, but ‘biting off’ the masters one module at a time has proved more than manageable. The learning has quickly and directly informed and improved my confidence and work. Southampton have been so supportive – the lectures, projects and reading have been accessible and relevant, and the assessments have been fair, detailed and supportive.”
Colin McAllister, Senior Public Health Practitioner at Southampton City Council, 2021 first year student
